J. Cole – Fire Squad

J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive (Album Cover, Tracklist & Snippets)

J. Cole delivered a top 5 album of 2013 in Born Sinner and he hopes to be perceived the same in 2014 with Forest Hills Drive. One of the songs that will surely be a fan-favorite is Fire Squad, the sixth track on the LP that gives off that classic Cole vibe.

One aspect of the song you will quickly grasp is the name-dropping of a few big-name artists. Those artists include Eminem, Justin Timberlake & Iggy Azalea. So, why these artists? Well, maybe you didn’t realize it at first glance, but all 3 artists are white. Basically, Cole calls out these white artists for appropriating black culture, heavily referring to awards shows. I’m sure Cole meant no harm with these lines but you know how lyrics can be taken out of proportion.

Give Fire Squad a listen below and be sure to support good music by pre-ordering the album on iTunes before it hits stores on December 9th.

“Watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile.”

  • YaHomeboy

J.Coles songs dont flow well. Not it terms of his voice but the content. It just sounds like a really clustered song that doesnt feel smooth

  • crayzbeatz

he doesn’t name drop Justin btw….. writer didn’t even hear the song???

  • baby of Stan

People got this stuff twisted he is just rapping about facts. And by the way Eminem is now trash. Go clear your ears out and stop being f-ing “Yes Men” so he can feel like he has something to prove again”….

    P.S Song is Fire!

why are we making comparisons between logic and cole? that’s some stupid shit.

  • Holy_Ryu

This wasn’t really a diss towards the white artists J-Cole mentioned but from what I was getting he was stating the truth about the changes that’s going on in Hip-Hop.

    • AlwaysBlossom

      umm no…

  • Los21

He needed some buzz for his new album. Why else would he mention eminem? Any other time he talked about eminem he was talking about how big a fan he was. Now this

    • mtgrell

No he just spit the truth has nothing to do with him being a fan of em or wanting hype for the album song is fire without last verse but that last on is so real

  • Aiden_Abetting

    J cole > Logic

    • Fred

Ya, but it’s closer than it seems. Not sure why you have to make the comparison though, they’re both doing their thing.

      -Huge fan of both.

      • Aiden_Abetting

I feel j cole addresses better topics and has better song concepts. Logic is dope don’t get me wrong but lately I been feeling like he’s stuck in the same lane spittin bout the same shit…..

        • yas

          did he dissed eminem ?

          • dillon

            yeah

          • Robbie

not at all. just says they play white peoples rap (which is black music) or music over whites which Eminem already knows. Eminem: white America- “if I was black I would’ve sold half I didn’t have to graduate from Lincoln high school to know that.” Without me- “I am the worst thing since elvis Presley To do black music so selfishly. And used it to get myself wealthy”

          • Aiden_Abetting

Depends how Em takes it really…I doubt it’s grounds for eminem to respond but what he said is true tho….

        • disqus_xpmwx1oUV3

That is because he does spit the same shit over and over. He is a flow rapper, he has a good line here and there, but his flow is what really shines. I heard Under Pressure, and what I took from that album is that he can utilize other peoples flows pretty good, but lyrical structure is average at best.

          • Aiden_Abetting

My thoughts exactly…..j cole has both the flow and lyrical structure….logic could be great if he stepped it up

      • disqus_xpmwx1oUV3

Not closer Logic is nowhere near Cole. Logic has good flow, but his lyrics are repetitive as hell. Cole brings raw bars that are in your face and metaphorically genius as well. Logic is not that deep bar wise his flow is what you are enamored with.

        • Fred

Only reason I say it’s closer than he thought is because Logic isn’t done evolving yet. Cole has a few years on Logic in the game. Cole wasn’t sayin’ much before the Warm Up either. We’ll see, but I do agree Cole will probably keep the edge over Logic for their careers. I just feel like Logic has some stories to tell he hasn’t told yet.

          • Aiden_Abetting

He’s been spitting the same story that’s what needs to change….the story bout his bro and him struggling and him bein on drugs before and all that we heard it so many diff ways. Tell the people something they don’t know

          • disqus_xpmwx1oUV3

I have been listening to dudes mixtapes, his subject matter is very limited. Cole has the upper hand in content no question. He talks about the women, has social commentary, and speaks on issues in the community that actually plague people. Logic has repetitive lyrics and recycled content. I do not see how he will edge out cole in subject matter, especially after hearin the leak of 2014 Forest Hill drive.

      • Ghost Of Len Bias

Maybe he’s saying Cole’s bars are illogical, thus he’s better than anything that makes sense.

    • Ninja Samurai

      Elzhi > J Cole

      • Aiden_Abetting

        Truuuu lol
