If the track name wasn’t immediately followed by “Lecrae feat. Ty Dolla $ign,” it’d be hard to believe the aforementioned artist was on the song at all.
But sure enough, that is indeed the voice of Lecrae Moore on the first and third verse of ‘Blessings,’ a recent single released by the Reach Records founder.
This song has a completely different feel from anything Lecrae’s ever been a part of, and when juxtaposed with his other albums or even the single with Statik Selektah called ‘Live and Let Live,’ seems out of place.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it just stands, stylistically at least, in stark contrast to the typical, lyrically-heavy songs he’s usually orchestrated.
Regardless, the laid back nature of ‘Blessings’ coupled with Dolla’s hypnotizing hook has an “everything’s gonna be okay” vibe to it, and it’s hard not to like everything about it.
Ty Dolla $ign’s hook has a surprising air of humility to it, so it seems an artist who has always exuded such humility in Lecrae, directly influences Dolla’s approach here:
“If ever took a loss, I learned a lesson
I won’t ever think I’m better than the next man…”
That line is certainly for thought, and refreshingly pious. Like the rest of the track, it just has a soothing calmness about it.
Lecrae has caught flack for some of the artists he’s worked with considering the overt Christian worldview from which he’s always rapped and spoken, but he is quick to direct naysayer whom he feels don’t fully understands his intentions to his best-selling book entitled “Unashamed,” which explains in detail the direction of Lecrae’s artistic ventures.
“Man it’s a blessin’ ’cause we ain’t ever had a lot/
But all we need is all we got.”
